Ok, so you're curious about how to use FTP right? Spiffy! Hopefully I can help you. On this little tutorial, I include images, but I have them thumbnailed. To view them properly, just click on it and it will open up in a new window. Anyhoo, this tutorial will show you how to use WS_FTP. There are plenty of others out there like CuteFTP and more, but I prefers WS_FTP. Why? Well you can download it for free if you are a student, a teacher, work for the government or have some one in the family that does...etc. 

If you want to download the program, I recommend Download.com or you could just type in WS_FTP in your favorite search engines and choose another site.

Got the FTP program you want to use? Good! Now just click on it to open it up. This is of course after you register it. Got that done right? Okie dokie. Now, my example uses WS_FTP. I assume this is the same with other FTP programs, but I'm not sure since I haven't used any others. ^^ Hopefully this will help you if have any other type. Onward to the instructions!



After opening WS_FTP you'll see this screen. Under Host name, you put your host's domain name(in this example I'm pretending it's kchanisweird.com), under user ID you put your ID: in this example it's kchanisweird and under password you put your password!! Then you click OK. That's all you have to do here!

Next is...


Here's what the window looks like when you get logged in! On the right side you see your very own folder, in kchanisweird.com! Currently there is a cgi-bin. Ummm I'm not very good with cgi...so I'll just skip this part(since I can't do lot of cgi programming)! On the left side is the files in your computer. Do you see the drop down menu? That's where you would select the drive and folder you want to be in. Right now I'm in my C drive in my documents. There you see all the folders that are stored there! 

Dun...dun...dun 


Okay, so I click on the zelda folder! Now I'm in C:\My Documents\zelda. Now you can see everything in the zelda folder. I want to upload my first page called index.htm. I click on index...and it highlights it. 

Finally it's the end!! 


In the last step I click on index.html right? Well the next step is to upload it. How? Do you see those arrows in the middle? After clicking index.html, I click on the right arrow and it transfers the page to the right side! Now that page is in your folder!! 

A good way to tell that everything went smoothly is by the bottom window. It was tell you that the transfer succeeded and it was complete! The cool thing is that you can upload multiple files with FTP!! If I wanted to, I could also upload members.htm, thankyou.jpg and link2.gif at the same time!! When you want to leave FTP just click Exit!!
